members of JOHSPA, highlighting the depth of expertise, research, and practical experience
within our professional community. We are proud to highlight the thought leadership,
professional expertise, and lived experiences of our members. Two timely and impactful articles
written by JOHSPA members that address critical safety challenges affecting both our roads and
workplaces across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.

The first article explores energy-based safety application in the Caribbean, focusing on
protecting workers from high-energy hazards, particularly in high-risk industries and during
post-disaster restoration activities. Grounded in modern safety science, the piece emphasizes
controlling hazardous energy at its source and strengthening resilience to prevent serious
injuries and fatalities.

The second article examines defensive driving in Jamaica, positioning it as a vital strategy to
reduce motor vehicle accidents and fatalities. Drawing on national, regional, and international
data, the author underscores the human, economic, and public health consequences of road
traffic incidents while reinforcing the urgent need for sustained education, enforcement, and
behavioural change.
Together, these contributions reflect JOHSPA’s commitment to advancing evidence-based safety
practices, fostering professional dialogue, and supporting a culture where safety is viewed not
as compliance, but as a shared responsibility. We commend our members for their dedication to
knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement in occupational health, Safety, and public risk
reduction.
